Meet The Designer: Nanushka

September 30, 2020
From its iconic butter soft vegan leather pieces thatexude a confident ease and subtle femininity to wardrobe staple pastel coloured t-shirts, Nanushka delivers a versatile, day to night wardrobe for the modern woman. With a serious eye on sustainability, value and quality, the Hungarian based brand is helmed by London College of Fashion alum Sandra Sandor.

We (virtually) sat down with Sandra to discover the story behind Nanushka and where she sees the sustainable fashion brand heading in the future.

Tell us a little about yourself and how Nanushka came to be?

The brand's history goes back to 2006. During my studies at London College of Fashion I got very inspired by the theme of my final project and wanted to further develop my thesis into a full collection.

The theme was inspired by the BauHaus movement "Form Follows Function" which really resonated with my aesthetics and it became the core value of the brand which I follow to this very day and try to incorporate into all of my collections.

After graduating I moved back to Budapest where I grew up and currently live with my fiance Peter Baldaszti, who is the CEO of Nanushka, and with the help of my mother's network I established Nanushka. My mom established one of the first childrenswear businesses in Hungary during the communist regime so she had a really great network of seamstresses and I was able to create a little atelier.

What is the vision for your brand in the future?

We have many exciting plans ahead of us which includes launching a sunglasses and homeware collection. We are working on some exciting collaborations as well and developing our vision for the Nanushka universe.

It's very important for me that everything we do reflects our values and commitment to sustainability on which we will be working very hard in the future. It's a commitment that I and my team are very passionate about and we continuously strive to achieve our goals and with our recent collection we were able to make our most sustainable collection so far.

However, there is still a lot of work to be done and we are just at the beginning of our journey.

Budapest Overview Photo

Your brand is based in Budapest, what do you love most about this city? Where would we most likely find you for:

Breakfast
Sarki Fuszeres - cozy with fresh farm to table approach.

A fun night out
I'm not a party person, but I love dinners with friends. I would say Deryne on a hot summer night sitting outside on their terrace with a glass of refreshing wine spritzer, in Hungarian "froccs".

A culture hit
The Castle District is magical, full of history and amazing architecture.
I grew up there and I still love to walk around there admiring the elaborate details on the buildings and the stunning view

What are you most looking forward to post-covid?

I love living in Budapest but I really miss travelling and discovering new places. Italy is one of my favourite destinations to travel and I can't wait to go back to revisit our favourite places.
